Sales Interview Do's

It is no secret that the current job economy is tough.  There are more and more people looking for sales jobs and fewer positions available than in previous years.  For many this makes landing a job extremely difficult.  However, this does not have to be the case.  In fact, openings for sales jobs are currently on the rise and with the right interview and application skills you may be able to get that dream position.

However, before you can be confident that you know how to get the job you will need to dedicate yourself to investigating what the do's and don'ts of the sales industry are.  Once you have a solid grasp of these you are ready to start selling yourself as a prospective employee.

  • Do recognize that your cover letter and sales resume are an opportunity to sell you.  This is especially true if you are looking at going into the sales industry. In sales jobs you are selling products, and today you are selling your own qualifications and personality to the employer. Recognize this and close the sale.
  • Do prepare yourself for the interview.  Do some research on the company that you are interviewing with so that you are armed with some background knowledge in your interview.
  • Do think about your physical appearance prior to going to your interview.  First impressions say a lot about people, and you do not want yours to be negative.  Instead dress nicely in conservative clothes, tone down the makeup, ensure that you are clean shaven, and enter with a smile.
  • Do greet your interviewer confidently and respectfully.  Sales jobs require you to be outgoing, and you want to display this in the early stages of your interview.  Look your interviewer in the eye and greet them with a firm handshake.
  • Do remember to send a follow up thank you.  Many prospective employees leave the interview and think that the process is over.  However, people who land sales jobs recognize that a quick thank you note or email may be exactly what they need to seal the deal.
