Secretary Resume Writing Tips
Being a secretary is a huge responsibility. Not only do you typically have to organize and run the office, but you also have to take notes, take messages, type letters or correspondences, and much, much more. A secretary is relied on to ensure the office runs efficiently, and to take some of the responsibility and daily tasks away from the boss so that he or she can focus on making the business grow and prosper. The following are some tips you can use to help you create a secretary resume that will really stand out.
Organization
A boss is going to want to know that the secretary he chooses is organized. This can be conveyed on your resume by making sure everything's lined up correctly, and everything is listed in proper order. That includes your previous experience, your education, your accolades and more.
Attention to Detail
Secretaries must be very detail oriented. If they aren't, things are going to get missed, appointments aren't going to be logged correctly, and the business could take a hit from it. Therefore, make sure your resume is absolutely correct. That means no spelling errors, proper punctuation, making sure you remain consistent with font and bolding, and that the resume is laid out in a way that's easy to read.
Previous Experience vs. Education
If you have both education and experience, then kudos to you. You should have no problem making your resume stand out so that you can secure that job. However, if you only have one or the other, make sure you make that thing the main focus of your resume. If you have lots of job experience as a secretary, list that as well as all the things you did for your former boss or bosses. If you only have education and no job experience, list the fact that you're a graduate but it might also help to list all your scholastic achievements as well as extra-curricular activities that might apply to secretarial work.
Write a Good Cover Letter
Finally, the most important part of a secretary resume is the cover letter. A boss wants to know that he will get along with his secretary and that he or she is someone the boss can spend eight hours a day or more with comfortably. The cover letter is a way to show your personality as well as how badly you want the job. Really let yourself shine. Really talk yourself up. This is your chance to prove to the boss that you have what it takes to get the job done; whatever job the boss puts in front of you. If you follow the above tips when writing a secretarial resume, you'll undoubtedly get the job you're applying for and you'll beat out all the other applicants vying for the same job.
