How To Become a Kindergarten Teacher
Teaching young children in a warm and enlightening environment where students can learn is an important thing for everyone. Kindergarten teachers teach in this atmosphere every day. Being a teacher can be a fun job, as the day usually goes by fast. Your day will be filled with a variety such as students doing crafts, singing and playing. Of course, there will be bad situations to deal with such as fighting or children not wanting to be in school. Get ready to work hard and get the proper education in order to become a kindergarten teacher.
First, you are going to need an education before becoming a teacher. Obtain or major in elementary education at a local University. To teach kindergarten in the United States, you will need a minimum of a four-year degree from a University. To gain experience in the kindergarten classroom, you can do things such as volunteering or participating in co-op placements. This will ensure that you have a feel for the job or the environment before continuing your education.
Remember to collect things such as pictures, projects, awards, notes and other documentation while volunteering or if you are doing a related activity to be in the classroom. These will help you when you start teaching and also, you can use it as a portfolio when you go for a job interview. Focus on things that relate to kindergarten like bulletin boards, games, puzzles or other stuff you might have created or been given.
Create a portfolio. This can be done in a binder or through a small book. These sections will allow you to include things such as letters of recommendations, projects, lesson plans, parent involvement and other teaching philosophy. Fill the whole portfolio of your experiences and love for children as it demonstrates your passion for the job.
Like all job preparation, practice doing interviews. Get somebody to interview you and be ready to showcase your portfolio. The pretend interviewer should ask you questions such as what a principal may ask if they are interested in hiring. Explain how you would teach the alphabet through your lesson plans, how you set up play times, communication tactics or tools with parents and what rules you would put in place to make sure that the children learn in a safe and happy environment.
Keep a look out on your local school boards for postings on kindergarten job openings. Most online applications require you to send the board your resume through the board of education but you can also call the school districts. Be sure to show your interested by following up. Keep in mind you only need one degree to teach kindergarten, but some boards may require you to attend workshops or other gatherings. This is normal because as a teacher you will continue to upgrade your education.
Ensure you bring your portfolio with you to all interviews. The principal may request to see it and it will definitely show your skills and how dedicated you are. Answer all questions openly, honestly and to the best of your ability. A kindergarten teacher must show they can be patient, understanding, committed and be able to provide a positive learning environment for their students. Being a kindergarten teacher is a rewarding job but it can be demanding at times.
