How to Write a Sales Cover Letter

Getting sales employment can be very competitive.  Preparing a sales cover letter that will show the prospective employer what value you can bring to their company is a necessity as you will need to find a way to make yourself stand out from the others that may be applying.  There are several things you can do to prepare your cover letter to do the job that you need it to.


First you must spend some time putting together information about the company that you are applying for.  You should visit their website and try to get a good feel for what they are looking for in an employee.  You need to find out what type of management they have so you know how to gear your answers during the interview.  You will have the necessary information that is needed to form your cover letter in a way will ensure that you get an interview.


You should take full advantage of all of the paragraphs in the cover letter.  Use the first paragraph to drop a few key names of important people in the sales industry.  Be sure that they are names that will be important to the people that are reviewing the cover letter.  You should include the name of a person that is recommending you for the position.  Be sure that you are truthful because it is possible that someone there knows the person and can follow up on your statements.


The second paragraph should give details about your skills and abilities.  Be sure that you only make reference to your abilities that will apply to the position you are applying for.  For example, they do not really need to know that you are an excellent cook or that you can fix a car.  They are more interested in your ability to meet sales requirements and to work well with customers.


The third paragraph should include details about sales awards you have received or how you have met or exceeded the requirements at your previous employers.  Be sure to point them to your resume to get more detail about the positions you have held and the other responsibilities that you had.


It is important that you stress your ability to work as part of a team and individually.   Many sales positions require you to work in a team setting and your proven abilities to do this will make you more enticing to a prospective employer.


Always remember that your sales resume cover letter is the first thing that they will see when they consider you for the position.  This is your chance to make a great first impression and to lead them toward choosing you for an interview.  You want to wow them with your abilities and make them want to know more about you.
The closing of your sales cover letter should let them know that you are willing to work hard to increase the sales for their company.  If you decide to tell them that you will be calling to follow up, be sure to hold true to your statement.  Be on time with your follow up call.  This will show them that you are reliable and that you will hold true to your commitments.  If you follow through with these guidelines you are setting yourself up for a great interview and a good chance at getting hired.
