Job Description: The primary duty of the Port Engineer is managing the material readiness of the Research Vessels operated by OSU Ship Operations the vans in the van pool and the Ship Operations Facility in Newport Oregon The Port Engineer is a critical part of a small dedicated team The Port Engineer will perform a variety of tasks including assisting with the recruiting and selection of vessel and shorebased employees preparing specifications for shipyard and major repair activities specifying major vessel equipment for purchase assisting in the preparation of budgets and proposals implementing procedures and maintaining documentation to meet a variety of regulatory requirements including the Computer Maintenance Management System CMMS for the vessels and shore equipment Safety Management System SMS and US Coast GuardAmerican Bureau of Shipping inspection and survey A portion of the incumbents time is spent out of the office in handson activities such as crane operations and troubleshooting vesselbased engineering issues The College of Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system that includes the human dimension It operates numerous stateofthe art laboratories two oceanographic research vessels the 177foot oceangoing Oceanus and the 54foot coastal research vessel Elakha operates the Endurance Array of the Oceans Observing Initiative and is overseeing the construction of three new Regional Class Research Vessels for the Academic Research Fleet The College has an annual budget of more than 50 million with support coming from the National Science Foundation the Office of Naval Research National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies It has more than 100 faculty 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students Graduate programs include MS and PhD degrees in Ocean Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Geology and Geography and an MS degree in Marine Resource Management The College has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences with several minors and certificate programs 30 Assist with shipyard logistics and maintenance during ship visits and logistics and maintenance of the UNOLS Van Pool management Provide support for scientific operations including planning for loading and unloading dock facilities and agent services in other ports operating cranes and forklifts and assisting in the connection of vessel services scientific support equipment such as winches and vans Handle procurement and inventory control of parts for all vessels 15 Identify need for new navigation communications science support and safety equipment upgrades on Ship Operations vessels Ship Operations shore facility and UNOLS laboratory vans Write specifications to obtain install and maintain both ship and shoreside equipment according to applicable international and United States US regulations as well as UNOLS Research Vessel Safety Standards 15 Provide other support as needed for the regulatory compliance of Ship Operations vessels by planning for unusual scientific operations onboard vessels maintaining regulatory compliance of the shipboard scientific vans in the National Science FoundationUNOLS West Coast Van Pool managed by OSU and performing other such tasks as may be identified by the Marine Superintendent 10 Prepare specifications with the assistance of the Captain Chief Engineer and Marine Superintendent for vessel drydocking major machinery overhauls and modifications to the vessels and vans Develop criteria to evaluate proposals for work and participate in selection panels for contractors 10 Assist the Marine Superintendent and Ship Operations Coordinator in preparing annual operation schedules developing operating budgets writing proposals and tracking expenditures 10 Relieve Engineers limited to current license at sea and in port as required 5 Prepare maintain and audit safety plans for OCEANUS and the Ship Operations facility in compliance with the ISM Code for Safe Operation of Ships the Marine Pollution Prevention Code MARPOL International Shipboard and Port Security Code Title 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations CFR and the International Maritime Organizations International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea SOLAS 5 Recruit interview and select shore personnel including regular full time temporary and intermittent positions Provide leadership supervision and direction for assigned staff Plan assign and review work establish goals for each position assigned participate in addressing and responding to grievances developing a framework for corrective actions as necessary LocationRegion Newport OR 97365 To apply, go here: https://jobs.usatoday.com/Job/97615231/marine-engineer-job-in-newport-or-97365 zl06-40428
