Work from Home Billing Positions: Are You Qualified?

Everyone's gotten the spam emails and seen the junk advertisements:

"Work from home Billing. Make hundreds every ____ (day, week, etc) by just typing!"

I promise you, it isn't that easy. If work were that easy, everyone would be doing it. And if this particular profession was that easy, they'd have all the people they need and wouldn't be hiring.

Medical billing IS a specialized field. It requires training, just like any professional job. Medical billers take the time to learn their craft, and don't get the respect they deserve for what they do. I know exactly how they feel. As a writer, I often get snickers, the ominous "oh" (as in, "oh that's simple..."), and other common retorts when I state the nature of my job. Everyone thinks that because I work from home that the work I do is SO easy, and that any brainless wonder with fingers could do it.

Not so. Everyone can be trained. This is not a point for argument. However, there is a point for argument that those of us who work from home either "don't have real jobs" or "get to do whatever you want all day."

Work from home billing is no exception. Home workers work just as much, if not more than traditional out-of-home employees. In a typical day, I will spend more time at my desk than the next guy spends commuting, working, and commuting home all together. I'll probably do more actual work, too. Or maybe not. Either way, as home-based workers, we are AT LEAST equal.

Now that I'm done ranting, anyone with proper training is qualified to work in medical billing jobs. If you want to train in this field, you'll either need to attend college or find a company that's willing to train you. It's not extensive, though. It might take a few months of hands on training, or a year of education. And the pay is decent, too. So if you want, go ahead and find a work from home billing job. If it doesn't work out, you won't lose too much time or effort.

Good luck, and happy job hunting!
