Many dot-com companies are hiring employees on a work at home basis. It doesn't matter how much experience you have, or how willing you are to commute to a job, some companies just won't hire employees on-site any longer. First, there is no overhead for companies who hire contract employees. They don't need a desk, an office, office supplies, or other work-related amenities. They've got everything they need at home. Another reason many companies hire work at home com persons is because they can pay per project or on a rate basis that is easier than providing a salaried position to each employee.
Working at home allows many perks for the employee, as well. From flexibilty to less commuting time, there is a seemingly endless list of perks to having a work at home com position. Whether you get into it for the flexibility, or for the lack of commuting, you should know a few things before you get in over your head.
A good home worker vs. a bad home worker
A good work at home person will have a take charge attitude, and endless stream of motivation, and the ability to work unsupervised. Someone who isn't a good candidate for working at home would be lazy, unmotivated, and unable to function without constant supervision. A good home-based candidate has the office and other necessities to work from home, while a bad home worker doesn't have a separate office, or access to the necessary tools and devices. A bad home worker will sleep in till noon, work for three hours, and call it a day. A good home worker will set a schedule, get up early every morning, and work productively until their daily tasks are done.
These are some things to think about. Even though everyone wants to be a work at home com employee, not everyone is capable. Be realistic and honest with yourself when considering this career change. If you're not motivated and driven enough, stay in the office.
