Jason wants to be a travel agent. He also wants to work from home, but he doesn't know how to get started or where to look for help.
The work from home travel agent is one of the easiest work from home positions to set up. This is because you can take phone calls, e-mails, and online reservations from anywhere. Vacation planning isn't an exact science, so working from home is always an option. Now I'm not invalidating the work travel agents do; they do work hard, and I could never plan people's vacations so more power to them.
But really, if Jason wants to become a work from home travel agent, here's a few tips to get him (and you) started.
First, make sure you have a dedicated office space. In the event that you have to meet with clients in your office, it's helpful to have a space that is inviting and professional, separate from the rest of your home. Consider a first floor room close to the main entrance, or a mother-in-law suite or garage space. Make sure you have the necessary office stuff: phones, computers, desks, chairs, etc. Don't forget about seating for your potential clients, either.
If you don't have an office space available, don't stress. You can make a point to meet in neutral territory, such as a restaurant, with your clients (here's where the use of laptops comes in), or even suggest to come to their house. They'll think you're treating them special, and you'll get out of having to have an inviting office space.
You also need training and education to be able to operate a proper work from home travel agent business. Even if you limit yourself to vacation planning and non-traditional travel packages, you'll still need some knowledge of the industry. Consider online training, a short stint at a local travel agency, or a couple of classes at your local community college.
Once you've figured out your office situation and have the necessary training, you can start advertising your services. Use community bulletin boards, word of mouth, and internet advertising to get your business going. As long as you've got the training and the dedication, you'll be a successful work from home travel agent in no time.
