Phone Work at Home: What's Available

So you want to work at home... welcome to the club. With the explosion of the internet and e-commerce, it seems like everyone wants to work from home these days. And why not? It's convenient, flexible, and it saves companies tons of money by not having to take on full time in-house employees.

Just about any kind of job can be done from home, provided you have the know how and the "can-do" attitude. One of the top growing industries of home based work is telemarketing and customer service, which involves a lot of phone work at home. For these types of jobs, you should have experience. However, some companies are willing to train employees to do phone work at home.

You will need a landline phone that is dedicated solely to your work for most of these positions. Some companies don't require a dedicated line, but almost all require that you have a traditional home phone instead of a cell phone or VOIP service.

So if you're looking for phone work at home, here are some options:

  • telemarketing
  • sales
  • customer service
  • technical support

These fields are great for those who want to work from home, because they require minimal training and supervision. You can sit in your home office and make phone calls all day just as easily as you could sitting in a call center. As long as you have a quiet environment and are able to eliminate background noise, you'll be fine. The trick with doing phone work at home is to convince the people you call that you're actually calling from an office or professional service. If your five year old is screaming in the background, they probably won't buy it.

You can find work at home positions all over the internet, but if you're not on a trusted website, be very careful. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Also, your first stop should be to check into sites like Craig's List, Career Builder, and other well-known websites that advertise contract and freelance work. If you do find a position on a lesser known site, don't write it off. Check it out, see if it seems legitimate, and then decide what you want to do. And remember, if you're looking for a JOB, you should never have to pay someone to hire you. Doing phone work at home is just like getting any regular job-- would you pay the big corporation downtown to hire you as an office administrator?

I didn't think so. Just keep these things in mind when you're looking for phone work at home.
