Run a Home Nursery or Floral Shop

Run a Nursery or be a Florist in your Work at home Based Business

An excellent work at home based business for someone who loves flowers is to be either involved as a florist or in running a flower nursery. In both cases the opportunity for this to be done as a work at home based business is likely going to be more successful in rural locales. In an urban area working as a florist could still work given the right location; but, a nursery as a work form home based business would probably be a stretch due to the overhead involved in the space required. Besides, people living in large urban areas normally do not have a lot of space in which to plant things. They might however have ample space to put potted indoor or balcony flowers.

The proper business licenses are obviously going to be required to run either a florist shop or nursery as a work form home based business. Like a good share of businesses it will also incur some significant upstart costs for things such as advertising, refrigeration equipment, stock, shelving, sufficient capital to see the business through start up and establishing itself as a profitable business, etc.

What do you need to be a florist?

  • a love for and knowledge of flowers as well as a gift for working with people and understanding their needs.
  • knowing what flowers are available at given times of the year and how to arrange them into attractive bouquets and other arrangements is of the utmost importance
  • knowing what times of years are going to be the busiest i.e. Valentines, Mother’s Day, Easter, etc.
  • what flowers and accessories are most appropriate for a given occasion: birthday, wedding, wedding anniversary, funeral, etc.
  • enough capital to procure refrigeration units for storage and display of flowers

What do you need to run a nursery?

  • like a florist, you must have an absolute love of flowers and other plants
  • a knowledge of what plants to have at a given time of year based on your locale and when to plant them if propagating your own
  • plenty of space to grow and display flowers
  • have room to display and sell gardening accessories
  • ample parking

Either being a florist or running a nursery as a work at home based business will prove rather challenging. Neither one is a work at home based business to be taken lightly. Each will take a great deal of love of the job and patience while watching your business grow. However, the result of becoming successful in such a business would be very rewarding.
