Cement, Block and Brick Work
If you are good at working with cement and laying concrete block or brick, you should be able to keep quite busy during the season of the year that allows for such work to be done. That season will vary greatly from one part of the country to another. In southern Arizona, New Mexico, California, and Florida this might well be a nearly year round business opportunity. Whereas, in areas such as the Dakotas, Wisconsin and New England you might only of three or four months where the temperature is amenable to this type of work.
You needn’t maintain a fancy store front when such a business can be done just as readily working from home.
A person bonded to do such work may find it easier to find jobs. That provides no real problems though because you can work from home and still be bonded. In addition to being bonded you will want to have good liability insurance and maintain a proper business license. The business license might not be necessary if you just plan on working from home and doing a few jobs for friends. However, if you expect to advertise and work outside your immediate circle of friends don’t jeopardize your work by failing to have a license and the necessary work permits for a given job. Part of the reason for getting the work permit is to make sure that the work you do is not going to be at odds with any zoning rules.
Be prepared to invest in good tools. A good portable cement mixer is a must for some smaller to medium size jobs. Some larger jobs may entail contracting a cement truck to deliver a specified amount of concrete to your work site at a given time. If you are good with cement but not really knowledgeable in the laying of block or bricks, then limit your work from home business to things such as pouring sidewalks, patios and driveways. Don’t make claims to be able to do something only to do a poor job of it. It is better to limit the type of work you do, do it in a timely manner and do it right the first time. I f you do your work form home business should thrive.
If you do in fact know how to properly lay concrete block and brick then you might also want to expand your work from home business to build block fences, retaining walls, fireplaces or even outside barbecues. In some places where brick homes are built you might even find work laying brick for new homes or additions. Pouring footings and basements is also another possibility depending upon your qualifications.
