Work as a Handy Man

Work from Home as a Handy Man

Are you that proverbial jack of all trades? If you are good at doing many types of work around the house you might want to consider working as a handy man. You don’t need magical powers like Leo on “Charmed” just the honest desire and ability to help out around the house.

A good handy man is always in demand. Now days people often look for specialists in everything. That need not be the case. If you are a handy man and want to work from home, there is plenty of business to go around. Though an independent handy man will more likely find it easier to work from home in a smaller town, success can certainly be had in the city also. But, be prepared to advertise. Today many younger people will go on line to find most anything they need. Still, expect to pay for that yellow pages advertising. That is still what comes to mind for many in the older generation as well as for those who still don’t have an on line computer.

Regardless of what part of the country you’re in, to run a work from home business such as being a handy man, you need to be well trained, have the proper business licenses and, today more than ever have liability insurance.

As an independent handy man you may be looking at doing fix up jobs, remodels, installing new cabinets or other somewhat smaller jobs such as fixing drawers or leaks under the kitchen sink. Regardless of what size project you choose to focus on, always give the job your best effort. Believe it or not most people can tell if you are or are not doing your best. Put on your happy face and prove you earned the contract you received.

Beyond licensing and training two of the most important things you can do to make your work from home business a success are to be timely and courteous. Let’s face it. In the city at least there is any number of handymen to choose from. However, who is a person most likely to call when they have general fix up problems, no matter how many names are in the phone book, the person who has treated them with respect and has been there when they said they would.

So if you want to be a success, earn it with your actions! If you tell someone you will be there at a certain time, be there. If not explain what the hold up was. Obviously you cannot control the weather. But barring the weather being a problem you should be on the job when you say you will be. Explain any delays to your client as well as what caused them. Be courteous in general and you will find word of mouth advertising will carry you a long way toward success in your work from home enterprise.
