Work from Home as an Electrician
A good electrician is always in demand. Now days many people tend to think of the job of being an electrician as being a big business employing numerous electricians. That need not be the case. Especially if you are a master electrician and want to work from home, there is plenty of business to go around. Though an independent electrician will more likely find it easier to work from home in a smaller town, success can be had in the city too. But, be prepared to advertise. Today many younger people will go on line to find most anything they need. Still, expect to pay for that yellow pages advertising. That is still what comes to mind for many in the older generation as well as for those who still don’t have an on line computer.
Regardless of what part of the country you’re in, to run a work from home business involving electrical work, you need to be well trained, have the proper business licenses and, today more than ever have liability insurance. If you plan on bidding on projects of any size you will also find you’ll need to be bonded.
If you are considering taking on large projects in addition to being bonded, you will likely be looking at the need to have other electricians working under you. You might look into specializing in one area. For example, maybe you are one of the only electricians in the entire area really qualified to work on new stage lighting. The number of high schools or other entities building new stages is going to be limited. However, there are always remodels and general repair. Besides you might not want to bid out an entire high school unless you have a sizeable crew. But, if you have the know how for stage lighting you might well be able to become a subcontractor for the general contractor. This of course is just one example. There would be plenty more out there where your specialty could come in handy.
Beyond licensing and training two of the most important thing you can do to make your work from home business a success are to be timely and courteous. Let’s face it. In the city at least there is any number of electricians to choose from. However, who is a person most likely to call when they have an electrical problem, no matter how many names are in the phone book, the person who has treated them with respect in the past and has been there when they said they would will get the call.
So if you want to be a success, earn it with your actions! Be on time. Finish work within bid parameters and above all be courteous to those for whom you perform the work. They will remember you and may come looking for your services or recommend you to others in the future.
