Work from Home Teaching Music
Unlike many other work from home jobs where most anybody can be a success, teaching music requires the skill of being a musician. Most any able bodied person can make a go out of yard care or any number of other jobs. However, to teach music one must have knowledge of music themselves. Not only must one know music, they must also have the patience of Job, especially when teaching kids. It is quite one thing to know how to sing or play an instrument yourself. It is quite another to transfer that knowledge to a pupil.
Two of the more common types of music taught in the form of a work from home job are voice and piano lessons. That is not to say that income couldn’t be earned teaching another instrument, it can. The key is to know your music and know your audience. It can be especially difficult for a music teacher if the audience is a pupil who is there because the parent wants them to learn to sing or to play an instrument and the child doesn’t want to. The opposite end of the spectrum is to teach only adults where the person taking the lessons is the one paying for them. If that is your audience it will still require patience, but, a willing student always makes a much better student than one who is coerced into being there.
Unfortunately, like most any other work form home business in this day and age, it is a good idea to have liability insurance. That is much easier done than most people think. Such liability insurance for a teacher can usually be built into your home owner’s policy for a pittance compared to what can be earned. One thing you generally don’t have to worry about when working from home as a music teacher is a business license. Though, it never hurts to be on the safe side and check out local ordinances.
Perhaps one of the most difficult things about giving music lessons is the scheduling. Generally speaking the norm is for each student to have approximately one hour once per week with the instructor. Considering the number of music students who are children or teens already enrolled in school that leaves only a small portion of the day open for lessons unless you should happen to be working with adults.
The upside is that you, as the music teacher, working from home can choose to take on as many or as few students as you wish. If you’re just looking for a little financial help maybe one or two days a week is all you will want to devote to the cause. If, on the other hand, you are more serious about it, an entire week can easily be filled by a good music teacher.
