Seamstresses and Tailors Work from Home with Great Success

Seamstresses and Tailors Working from Home

The number of people sewing in the United States in any way shape or form has declined considerably over the past several decades as more and more of this type work has been outsourced to other countries where the labor is cheaper. That does not mean however that there is not a high demand for qualified seamstresses and tailors in our economy. The accomplished or even novice seamstress or tailor can work from home and make some very good money in the process.

A novice seamstress or tailor working from home may well have children’s schedules to work around in addition to doing the necessary sewing to keep her or himself plenty occupied. The sewing novice obviously is not going to get involved in nearly as difficult a work as the more accomplished seamstresses and tailors. Still there are a lot of people who would rather buy a pattern and have someone make a special piece of clothing for a family member than buy it at sky high prices in some fancy department store. This gives them the option of choosing a pattern to their liking as well as a fabric which might go particularly well on them. The amount charged per project obviously is going to vary on the difficulty and the time estimated to be involved in piecing the item together.

When it comes to tailoring a novice might do a thriving work from home business by taking in or letting out men’s or women’s clothing to adjust for that seemingly uncontrollable battle of the bulge. Who, when they have a nice suit that has only been worn a handful of times, is going to want to go out and pay several hundred dollars on a new one when a small adjustment to the current one will do just as well?

When we start talking about the more accomplished seamstresses and tailors we can be talking big bucks. The seamstress or tailor me be called upon to take one or more old outfits and combine them into one new extraordinary piece. For example one seamstress was called upon to take one evening gown with beautiful lace and another with drop dead gorgeous bead work and create a new stunning gown combining the best aspects of the two. The work was tedious and very time consuming; the seamstress of course had to take measurements and then render a drawing of her concept of what the new gown would look like. Once the client approved she went to work.

This project took this top notch seamstress several weeks to complete. However, when she was done the finished product was beautiful beyond belief and provided her with several thousand dollars in work from home income. Needless to say someone working at this level works mainly by word of mouth.

A novice or midlevel seamstress or tailor won’t be making outrageous sums like the one mentioned above fro the gown. However, by working from home both seamstresses and tailors of all levels can earn a good income. Many of them may regularly have customers directed their way as a result of an overflow of work at a department or specialty store where the regular tailor or seamstress is overwhelmed.
