Tutoring can both be a great work from home idea and fun

A great work from home idea can come in many shapes and sizes. One really good work from home idea if you live near a university is to act as a tutor. Tutoring someone can be very fulfilling as well as profitable. The amount of tutoring you do obviously depends on several factors:

  • the demand for tutoring in subjects you are strong in
  • your own class schedule if you too are a student
  • the schedules of your pupil(s)
  • your patience and ability to explain subject matter
  • your personal relationship skills in dealing with others
  • consistency in timing study meetings
  • charge a fair price based on the going rate in your area for a given subject and your own proficiency in it

I have found that depending on the subject matter and my own knowledge base that tutoring as a work from home idea has worked out very well for me. While I specifically mentioned university proximity above, pupils can be high school students, university attendees, or business professionals. The amount you can charge for your services will normally vary depending upon the level you are working at. If tutoring a high school student you might charge $20 per hour, maybe a little more for an AP class. A college or university level student may be willing to pay $30-60 depending on the subject. A masters or doctoral candidate may be willing to pay $100 per hour if not considerably more if the tutoring involves editing a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation.

Tutoring as a work from home idea is not limited strictly to students. Often times a professional will need to be tutored in a second language in order to work with patients or clients effectively. A fully employed professional will normally be willing to pay top dollar as the acquired knowledge will have the benefit of increasing his/her earnings in the future. Not to mention improve customer relations and satisfaction.

I can honestly say from experience that tutoring at any level can be very rewarding to both the provider and the recipient. In order to find pupils if you are near a university it is usually as simple as going to a posting board and putting up a filing card or computer print out providing the information pertinent to what you are willing to do, when you are available and how much you charge and if that charge may be negotiable.

A major key for success in this type of work from home business is adhering to set schedules and enforce the importance of this with your pupil.
